Visit to the Hong Kong Palace Museum
2026-07-02

On 2 July 2026, teachers from the Putonghua, History, and Chinese History Departments led 30 Secondary 4 to Secondary 6 students on a visit to the Hong Kong Palace Museum. They attended the special exhibition, "Ancient Egypt Unveiled: Treasures from Egyptian Museums," jointly organized by the Museum and the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt. The objective of this study tour was to allow students to step out of the classroom, stroll through the museum galleries, and practice their Putonghua listening and speaking skills through artifact guided tours and discussions, achieving the goal of applying what they have learned.

The exhibition brought together 250 precious artifacts from several major museums in Egypt, providing students with a detailed understanding of Ancient Egypt's brilliant achievements in politics, religion, and art. Highlights included the highly historically significant "Colossus of Tutankhamun," exquisitely crafted gold items and stelae, as well as the highly anticipated anthropoid coffins and animal mummies.

By observing these mysterious historical relics up close, students gained insights into the unique concepts of life, death, and religious beliefs in Ancient Egypt, fostering a more multi-dimensional and profound understanding of the diverse development of ancient world history.

In addition to the Ancient Egyptian civilization exhibition, students also visited the exhibition "From Dawn to Dusk: Life in the Qing Court." Through over 300 treasured artifacts from the Palace Museum, they learned about the daily lives of Qing emperors, empresses, and court personnel across various aspects, including science, art, religion, and cuisine.

This study tour bridged Chinese Qing history with Ancient Egyptian civilization, which not only vastly broadened the students' international historical horizons but also enhanced their respect and reflection regarding human cultural heritage. Interacting and communicating within a Putonghua-only or bilingual cultural atmosphere, the students successfully broke the language barriers and experienced the joy of integrating history and language learning.
